This post is cross posted from my primary SWTOR blog: Summertime on Hoth.
I have no idea what I want to play. The game is days from early access and I am an obsessive planner and not being able to commit to a main is driving me bananas.
BWAHAHA, right? HOW many mains did I have in my last MMO? At least four. Five if you’re loose about how you count mains. And I played for five years, so I pretty much go through a toon a year. But I’m ready to choose now! I have my main’s name picked out, but I do not know what toon to bestow it on.
I’m a healer for life (*fistbump to my fellow healers and all that*) so I know I’m going to go with a healing Advanced Class, and I know that heavy armor looks like crap on toons with boobies and I am also pretty well dedicated to being a lady, IRL and online. So Trooper is right out. So that leaves two choices:
CONSULAR or SMUGGLER
The pros and cons, I keep tossing them around in my head. I know that the Consular is supposed to be the more conventional playstyle for healers, and I don’t have any problem with the conventional playstyle for healers in other MMOs. If I didn’t like that playstyle, I wouldn’t be healing by choice in all these different games, now would I? And I like the thought that they seem to get a little of everything, HoTs, shields, direct heals, it all seems to be there. Plus I love all that Jedi stuff. Lightsabers and crystals, robes and force powers. Nom. I definitely want to have the whole Jedi experience. But I’m not sure if I want to have it on my main toon.
Smugglers on the other hand seem like a fun, layered, intricate healing style, but that their “game” is primarily in resource management and their heals themselves are pretty straightforward heals. I keep hearing them compared to a holy paladin in WoW. Which gives me pause, because my first healing main was a holy paladin and I traded her out for more complexity in healing style. But I played the Agent like she was made out of pure crack in the beta, and I was lukewarm about the Inquisitor.
I also loved the stealthy side of the spec, I had good damage, questing was a breeze, and I got to play the archetype that I’ve always been attracted to in games, but that I usually don’t like the playstyle (believe it or not, my first character in WoW was a rogue, I like them sneaky bastards). A smuggler could be that smooth talking, sneaky, snarky, dirty rogue with a heart of gold that is my favorite type of character to play in tabletop settings, and I think the mechanics wouldn’t bother me that much.
But, then I’d have no lightsaber. /cry
I played my Inquisitor to level 12 and my Agent to level 17, so I expect there’s going to be a lot more changes before I know what the two classes will really play like at max level. But I’m also feeling a bit of pressure to commit to a main so that the guild can get started with our plans and our recruitment. Also, I’m an obsessive planner and I want to know how it’s all going to turn out already!
That said: How soon is too soon to commit to a main? Are you committed yet? Are you feeling pressured to commit?
Well in regards to recruitment if you plan on being a healer in either regard I can’t see it mattering that much which is your main unless you don’t think you’ll settle on a main until they are both 50. Play both until one reaches out to you and then run with it in my opinion.
